Corruption is globally regarded to be one of the most immoral and ethically wrong practices in the political realm. There is a reason as to why corruption has such a strong negative connotation associated with it, as impacts caused by its direct and indirect effects on society cause massive consequences. The very nature of corruption undermines almost all processes and goals set fourth by a liberal democracy, while causing high distrust and low public approval between officials and citizens. The study of corruption is nothing new; it has been the center of substantial analysis and research for decades. Surveying citizens and asking their perception of the level of corruption in their country mainly carried out early studies on corruption. Later, more direct ways of gathering data emerged with the use of undercover agents that allowed researchers to interpret more reliable data that ultimately gave them better results. Many people living in the developed or modernized world, such as North America or Europe, live under the rule of liberal democracies and are unaware of the extent of corruption that exists around the world. Many citizens living in developing countries face levels of corruption much higher than those found in democratically consolidated and developed states; as the societal environment found in developing states fosters the proper setting for corruption to take place.
